We are working on a new version that is being built from the ground up supporting mindmapping, themes, styles, auto-sync and more.

this will be a new version that you have to install. To move content from mac and ipad, simply use the sync.

if you have any old content on the old (discontinued) iphone app, export a page then import it back to the new app when it comes out.

How to get your data from the iPad to the Mac http://magicalpad.com/support/how-to-get-your-data-from-the-ipad-to-the-mac/ http://magicalpad.com/support/how-to-get-your-data-from-the-ipad-to-the-mac/#comments Thu, 29 May 2014 02:17:56 +0000 http://magicalpad.com/support/?p=112 We chose Dropbox as a vehicle for moving data across IOS and OSX devices. to do that simply do the following:

  1. Upgrade your iPad version to have dropbox. version 3.4.1
  2. Enable dropbox on your iPad from the notebooks view go to app settings and turn on Dropbox Import/Export switch
  3. Select each notebook, from the notebooks menu select export to dropbox
  4. Enable dropbox on the Mac or another device by turning on the switch from the app settings on the notebook view
  5. You will see that the notebooks pushed to dropbox show as a “shell notebook” that you can’t open but download.
  6. From the notebook menu select import from dropbox
  7. If you make updates on the Mac, push them back to dropbox then pull them back from the other devices

We tried for more than a month to get automatic sync to work, but it was having versioning issues due to the limitation of the API to meet the complexity of our data model. We will introduce automatic sync later using custom API.

P.S. the iPhone version is being updated with the latest features and will be released later. If you already have an iPhone version it won’t have dropbox sync. However, you can export single pages as MPX and open them on the iPad or the Mac version.

Why the switch from iCloud to Dropbox for Notebook export/import http://magicalpad.com/support/why-the-switch-from-icloud-to-dropbox-for-notebook-exportimport/ http://magicalpad.com/support/why-the-switch-from-icloud-to-dropbox-for-notebook-exportimport/#comments Thu, 22 May 2014 21:54:13 +0000 http://magicalpad.com/support/?p=109 We switched from iCloud to Dropbox for Notebook export/import due to the same reasons why we couldn’t implement iCloud seamless sync. iCLoud API was limited to meet our complex data model so was not able to allow a seamless sync of data. And Apple did not want to approve iCloud with manual export and import of data in the mac version even thought they approved it in IOS. drove us crazy.

So we had two choices to get it approved. Just remove iCloud altogether and not allow any data push, which was not logical, OR find an alternative for data push like you have and liked on the iPad. Dropbox was the alternative.

We spent billion cycles on automatic data sync both on icloud and dropbox. it just has lot of version conflict and lot of risks of data loss. The best solution later will be to build our own API.

Having issues with iCloud? Try this… http://magicalpad.com/support/having-issues-with-icloud-try-this/ http://magicalpad.com/support/having-issues-with-icloud-try-this/#comments Tue, 15 Oct 2013 22:02:24 +0000 http://magicalpad.com/support/?p=63 Having issues with iCloud? Try this…

The iCloud copy process is intentional rather than silent. See iCloud sync article for how it works and why.

  • You have to select a notebook and copy it to the cloud then copy it from the cloud on another device. If you are doing it this way and still is not working, do the following:
    • Make sure to keep local copies on all devices
    • Turn off iCloud from the app settings on both devices
    • Go to your Mac or PC and access iCloud (on the mac it is accessible from settings).
    • Select App data, then MagicalPad
    • Delete all MagicalPad app data on iCloud,
    • Turn back on iCloud on both devices from the app settings
    • Push a notebook from one device and make sure to see it on the other device
    • Once you see it, you need to Copy from the cloud. this will overwrite the local copy so make sure you want to do that or create a new copy.
    • Then repeat the same process for the other notebooks.

I hope this helps. If this still doesn’t work, please get more details and contact our Support.

iCloud http://magicalpad.com/support/icloud/ http://magicalpad.com/support/icloud/#comments Sat, 12 Oct 2013 00:41:12 +0000 http://magicalpad.com/support/?p=58 Does MagicalPad use iCloud Sync?

MagicalPad uses iCloud to store copy of each notebook so that you can download it on another device. It works similar to the famous iToughts HD, where you Copy a notebook TO the cloud, then on another device copy FROM the cloud. This way you can easily put a newer version of the entire notebook on the cloud and get it on the other device.

This is how it works and why

  • MagicalPad’s data data model is too complex for a silent sync.
  • We implemented a user intentional copy to Cloud and copy from could.
  • So once you make your changes you go to the notebook and from the context-menu choose to copy to cloud. This uploads a copy of the notebook to the cloud.
  • Once you do that, you will see a flag on the cloud icon within the notebook on the other device letting you know that you have a newer version on the cloud.
  • You can using the notebook menu download the notebook version from the cloud using copy from cloud.
  • It is important to know the following:
    • Copy to and from cloud is a full notebook copy, not at the page level
    • When you copy FROM cloud, it copies the full notebook and  does overwrite the local copy of the notebook, so before you say copy FROM cloud, make sure you are willing to overwrite you local copy.
    • When you copy from cloud, you get an option to overwrite or to create a new version – you have clear visibility of what you are about to do.

What’s next – iCloud API was limiting with our data model which is not simple, so we are planning to implement a full sync in 2014 with our own sync server technology in 2014.
